Yes. Hence the G2 at the front. There are lots of risk management courses out there. Some concentrate of commencing new businesses, some on the work health and safety legislation, and this one, which concentrates on the Resources and Infrastructure Industry.
Who should attend?
Basically you are a deputy who provides effective leadership of the operational teams in accordance with the daily plan. The deputy must direct, control and manage mine performance within the shift/day to ensure high standards of safety, quality and productivity are achieved.
Your role in a coal mine might be any of the following:
- Explosion Risk Zone (ERZ) Controllers
- Industry Safety & Health Representative
- Open Cut Examiner
- Underground Electrical Engineering Manager
- Underground Ventilation Officer
- Underground Mechanical Engineer
all of which require the risk management unit (as well as other units/certificates).
The competency for the above roles (as set out by the Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee) includes the unit:
- RIIRIS402E Carry out the risk management process
Other certifications or units may also be applicable to the role.
What will they learn?
This course provides the skills and knowledge required to carry out risk management processes, including planning, identifying hazards and assessing risk, and developing and implementing risk controls. It is appropriate for those working in supervisory roles overseeing and auditing the risk assessment process.
Objectives
The course will enable participants to:
- Plan and prepare for implementing the risk management process
- Identify workplace hazards
- Assess workplace risks and identify unacceptable risk levels
- Identify potential actions and develop risk controls
- Implement and evaluate risk controls
- Audit the risk management process and complete records
Course Outcome
Participants will be assessed via theory assessment and practical activities. At successful completion of the course participants will receive a nationally accredited Statement of Attainment for:

Recognition of Prior Learning
A learner’s history of study, skills and experience can be taken into account but it must support the criteria included in the units of competency. Documentary evidence will be required.
Course Venue & Equipment
This course may be conducted in our training rooms in Cairns, or on-site at client premises. Where courses are conducted on-site then a suitable venue is to be provided by the client company which includes data projection and a white board. The venue shall have sufficient tables and chairs for participants to be seated comfortably for the duration of training. Any catering costs shall be borne by the client company. Please contact us to discuss alternate arrangements if there is any difficulty in providing these facilities and equipment.
Additonal Costs & Expenses
Where the training is conducted outside the immediate Cairns area then additional costs will be applicable. Any airfares, travel, accommodation, meals and materials freight incurred in the provision of this training will be on-charged. Mileage will be charged at 80¢ (plus GST) per kilometre and traveling time will be charged at our standard rates. Please contact us for a formal quotation for courses conducted outside of Cairns.
Where consideration needs to be applied due to cultural, language, literacy, numeracy or other special needs, extra time will be allowed to ensure participants receive sufficient supported training. This time will be charged at our standard rates.
